CFTC Subpoenas Cryptocurrency Exchanges In Bitcoin Futures Investigation
Due to suspicions of market manipulation that may impact the final settlement price of CME’s bitcoin futures, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has reportedly subpoenaed four cryptocurrency exchanges, requiring them to provide “comprehensive trading data to assist a probe into whether manipulation is distorting prices” in the bitcoin-linked futures market.

Bitcoin’s Price Was Artificially Inflated, Fueling Skyrocketing Value
A concentrated campaign of price manipulation involving Bitfinex may have accounted for at least half of the increase in the price of Bitcoin and other big cryptocurrencies last year, according to a paper released on 13 June by an academic with a history of spotting fraud in financial markets. The new paper helped push down the already sinking price of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies on Wednesday.

SEC: Ethereum Not a Security, ICOed Security Tokens Can Become Non-Securities
In an announcement on 14 June, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Director of Corporate Finance William Hinman said that the commission would not be classifying ether or bitcoin as securities. Hinman’s announcement marks the official position of the SEC: the name isn’t important, but the way in which it’s sold, promised, and behaves is the key deciding factor.

SEC Allows Buying of Stocks with Crypto for First Time
One company has taken a giant leap forward in terms of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), by accepting payment in crypto for stocks. This development implies that the SEC is open to consider cryptocurrency use on a case-by-case basis, which allows for major shifts to occur, driven only by innovative companies willing to be open and transparent with their operations and, to “[follow] all SEC guidelines”.
